“Turbulence and delays can make flying a nuisance, but oftentimes, the worst part about being on a plane is the other passengers. Indeed, few things are worse than getting stuck on a cross-country flight next to a smelly or chatty seatmate. The question is, what is the best way to handle these uncomfortable circumstances?”
British Airways conducted a poll about airline etiquette for travelers across US, UK, Germany, France and Italy.
67% of the respondents agree that you should take one armrest and leave the other for the passenger beside you. After all, isn’t that basic etiquette?
87% say that exposing your bare feet during a long and tedious flight is a big no-no. Just take off your shoes or at least put your feet down. You wouldn’t want your neighbors to suffer in an 8-hour flight from New York to London.
80% of the travelers claim it’s fine to wake a sleeping neighbor if you’re in an urgent situation, but 40% say that you can do it only once to avoid disruptions because you should never mess up with a sleepy passenger. Meanwhile, 66% say that they would turn up their entertainment if their neighbor is snoring.
83% of the travelers say that a quick greeting would be fine but 42% of U.S. travelers say it’s impolite to share personal stories such as what Christmas carol did you sing two Christmases ago.
Sometimes, whenever we feel comfortable or friendly we tend not to think of our actions as something rude or offensive. We have to think of others too, because after all everyone in the plane is a passenger wanting to have a peaceful travel.
