Reuters is looking for a journalist to join its Ukraine bureau and cover the economy at the heart of Europe’s biggest war in a generation. This is a rare opportunity to be a central part of a small team that is helping to anchor one of the world’s most important stories.

Facing a 35% to 45% crash in its GDP this year following Moscow’s invasion, Ukraine is looking to the IMF, European Union, and United States for help on its debt and to pay for the reconstruction of its war-ravaged country.

This is a role for someone with a strong grasp of economics, foreign exchange and business news. However the successful candidate will also be able to write about the humanitarian disasters unfolding on the ground and connect them to the broader macroeconomic backdrop.

They will work across all facets of the file from breaking news to writing fast analytical pieces and longer form stories.

About the Role

As Ukraine Economics Correspondent you will

  • Work in a small team of text and visuals journalists, focusing on economic and corporate stories but also supporting Reuters broader coverage of the war and Ukrainian society
  • Cover fast breaking news from Ukraine’s government, central bank and major companies
  • Write smart, analytical and incisive initiative stories on Ukraine’s economy, society and industry
  • Build sources across government, companies and multinational organisations
  • Tell the story through the best medium – in words, videos, pictures or graphics

About You

To be Ukraine Correspondent you will have:

  • Excellent written English, and speak fluent Ukrainian and Russian
  • Experience working in hostile environments
  • A strong understanding of economics, foreign exchange and company news
  • The ability to work under pressure and ensure safety is prioritized
  • Superb news judgement and ability to prioritize stories
  • An eagerness to work as a team with text, TV and picture colleagues in the Kyiv bureau and beyond
  • Experience producing longer form enterprise stories
  • Some experience taking pictures and shooting video
