Shell’s chief executive Ben van Beurden is to step down at the end of the year, after almost a decade in the job.

The company said on Thursday that Wael Sawan will take on the role from January, when he will also join the board of directors. Van Beurden will continue as an adviser to the board until the end of June.

Sawan, based in The Hague, is director of Shell’s integrated gas, renewables and energy solutions division, and was previously the director of upstream.

Van Beurden has spent nearly four decades at the FTSE 100 company, and took on the top job in 2014.

Sir Andrew Mackenzie, chair of Shell, said: “Wael Sawan is an exceptional leader, with all the qualities needed to drive Shell safely and profitably through its next phase of transition and growth.

“His track record of commercial, operational and transformational success reflects not only his broad, deep experience and understanding of Shell and the energy sector, but also his strategic clarity.”

Sawan has been a member of Shell’s executive committee for three years, and has worked at the company for 25 years.
