Welcome to the Talking Biz News redesign: a new look and a look ahead


Monday, Aug. 15 marks a new beginning for Talking Biz News: Welcome to our first extensive redesign since 2013. 

While we hope you love what you see, I want to stress that for all the changes on the outside, plenty others are going on behind the scenes to make our content stronger, livelier and more varied than ever.

For starters, this rebrand brings us in closer alignment with our sister site, Qwoted, where I serve as editor in chief. While the matching blue and orange quote-bubble logos may look spiffy, they also symbolize a shared future. Qwoted is now the go-to platform for reporters on deadline, having outdistanced its competitors long ago. The TBN synergy promises even better things.  

As for TBN itself: I’ve hinted in past weeks at content additions coming with the rebrand. From media member Q&As to the addition of podcasts, much has been in the works for some time. Some of it’s just about ready to go. We’ll take the remainder of August to tweak out the new site — and make it even easier to follow — before that content comes your way. We’ll also solicit op-eds from thought leaders, and come September I’ll add my own column to the mix. 

The ramp up to redesign has also allowed us to reflect on what Talking Biz News can accomplish outside our core areas: reporting on journalism moves and business journalism matters. We’re studying what we can add to the conversation in areas such as banking, investment, and financial technology.

Listen up for a new editorial voice to take us beyond the news ticker status we currently occupy. Then there’s your voice; if you’re a subscriber, you’ll receive a survey shortly asking what you think of the redesign, what you like best about us and what you want to see more of in the future. 

And you haven’t subscribed yet, now is the time. We want to hear from you.  

Many people made this day possible. Hoping we haven’t left out any, we’ll start with Vested CEO Dan Simon and his Qwoted co-founder Matt Kneller. Cody Robinson at RedLab brought the redesign to life and threw the power-on switch at 7 a.m. Eastern today. Caroline McMullan has proven untiring and inspiring in her efforts to troubleshoot and sharpen the vision. Writer Mariam Ahmad has been reliable and solid during the transition. On the Vested side, shout outs to Keren Unrad and Christine Jeanine Nielsen. And on the Qwoted team, Vannyda Thach and Madelynne Kislovsky contributed time and bandwidth — even though they really didn’t have any to spare.

TBN owes its existence to Chris Roush, the Dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University. He continues to bring his experience, sound judgement and energy to this “website for pens in pursuit of the bottom line” that he founded in 2005. Remarkably, some of the rising stars whose moves we’ve covered in 2022 were still in kindergarten when TBN launched. 

So much has changed in 17 years and now TBN is changing, too. Here’s hoping we meet your high expectations, inspire your trust and earn your loyalty. Be sure to drop me a line and tell us what you think.
